Mawson is a broad State electorate, covering a huge swathe of the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula, from Clarendon in the North to Kangaroo Island in the South, and including such picturesque and historic villages as McLaren Vale, Willunga, Aldinga, Sellicks Beach, Myponga, Normanville, Yankalilla, Rapid Bay, Second Valley, Kingscote, Penneshaw and Port Jervis.
The local Member for the past 20 years has been the very popular Leon Bignell MP, who turned a notional marginal seat into a Labor stronghold. Leon was described by the ABC’s Anthony Green as “the best marginal seat campaigner” he’s seen.
Leon Bignell was appointed as Speaker of the lower house of the South Australian Parliament in 2024 and, as a consequence, resigned from the ALP.
Leon recently announced his decision not to stand for re-election, and his office manager Jenni Mitton was endorsed as the Labor candidate for the March 21 State Election.
Jenni will be facing off against quite a collection of right-wing parties, including the Liberals, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, Bob Day’s Australian Family Party and Stephen Pallars’ Real Change Party.
