It was 30 years ago, in May 1995, that a group of local environmental activists from the Willunga Hillsface Landcare Group began operating out of a small room at the front of Russel’s Pizza at 13 High Street Willunga.
It was the first shop-front environment centre to operate in South Australia, and one of the first in the whole of Australia.
The Landcare Group in time became the Willunga Environment Centre Inc., which is today the leading environmental agency in the Willunga Basin, with a list of achievements and projects of which we can all be proud.
To celebrate their first 30 years, the Centre is holding a gala dinner at Russell’s Pizza in Willunga on May 8th, which happens to be where it all started 30 years ago. Stay tuned for details. (See main photo.)
There’ll be plenty of good food and wine, live entertainment, charity raffles and more. All proceeds will go to the Willunga Environment Centre, to fund their ongoing projects.
The Willunga Environment Centre will also be letting the local community know all about the anniversary with a series of media releases, social media posts, radio interviews on local community radio, and a special, commemorative booklet.
If you have any old photos, historic memorabilia, or anecdotes from the early days of the Willunga Environment Centre, they would love to hear from you. You can drop them into the Centre at 15 High Street Willunga during their office hours, or contact the event coordinator Kerrod Trott on 0412 029 663 or by email at kerrod.trott@gmail.com
