Lesley Gray is a respected Kangaroo Island community leader, health educator and long-time advocate for sensible reform that puts people, health and local communities first. After 46 years working in health and wellbeing, she now teaches therapeutic movement both on Kangaroo Island and online, while remaining deeply involved in community life.
Since moving to the Island more than six years ago, Lesley has become known as a “mover and shaker,” serving on the American River Progress Association, supporting the Community Garden, volunteering at the Kingscote Show and helping organise local fundraising and community events across the region.
Lesley is a strong supporter of an immediate cannabis amnesty, particularly for medicinal cannabis patients. From personal experience, she believes cannabis is medicine and that no patient should face fines, criminal charges or driving penalties simply for managing their health. She is outspoken in her advocacy, encouraging education, compassion and evidence-based policy so patients can access treatment safely, affordably and without fear.
She also strongly supports developing a premium industrial hemp industry on Kangaroo Island, seeing it as a natural fit for the Island’s values and environment. Hemp offers farmers an alternative to intensive livestock production, improves soil health, reduces pressure on fragile ecosystems and creates new income streams through seed, fibre and value-added products.
Lesley supports hemp’s role in producing hempcrete, an energy-efficient, fire-resistant building material well suited to bushfire-prone regions like Kangaroo Island. Used in public housing and community infrastructure, hempcrete can lower long-term costs while creating skilled local jobs.
For Lesley, smart cannabis reform and a thriving hemp industry go hand in hand, delivering healthier people, stronger communities and a resilient, future-focused Kangaroo Island.
