A couple of local residents were walking on Aldinga Beach recently when they spotted a crew of uniformed workers cleaning up the beach.
On investigation, they learnt that a disaster relief organisation has now been hired by the State Government to clear Aldinga and Sellicks beaches of dead marine animals.
Disaster Relief Australia’s field supervisor Brian said they were hired by the SA Government to start clearing southern beaches of dead marine life that had not been cleared adequately by previous contractors.
Disaster Relief workers said they would call in a specialist team with a boat to attend to an apparently sick seal around 10 metres off-shore on Aldinga Beach near Ocean Street on Saturday morning 27th September around 9AM. (The seal was subsequently found to be in good health, and was later joined by another two seals.)
Brian said they had previously been employed by the State Government clearing dead marine life from city beaches including Brighton and Glenelg to encourage residents and dog-walkers to return to using the beaches. He warned that brown foam seen on the beach is algal and should be avoided.
Thanks for the tip-off.
