The Albanese Government continues to support investment in community projects in regional South Australia through the $400 million regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP).
The Government will provide $7.06 million to Alexandrina Council for the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail, under Stream Two of the RPPP which supports the delivery of construction-ready precinct projects.
The Discovery Trail will provide accessible, engaging and safe ways for tourists and locals to visit wineries, attractions and parks while cycling or walking through the area.
In a partnership between the Alexandrina Council, Langhorne Creek Grape and Wine Association, Langhorne Creek Hub and Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation, this project will boost tourism and local safety by delivering a 2.8-kilometre walking, running and riding trail connecting winery cellar doors and other attractions and parks in the local area.
This precinct project is designed to share the experiences of the Ngarrindjeri people through signage along the discovery trail and will improve use of public assets such as Alfred Langhorne Park, Memorial Reserve and Frank Potts Reserve which can be used for recreation, leisure, and sports purposes.
The project includes:
A 2-metre-wide shared-use path
A designated pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Bremer River,
Upgrades to Memorial Reserve to formalise parking, picnic facilities and public toilet facilities, and
New wayfinding signage, native landscaping and outdoor furniture including safety bollards, seating and water bottle filling stations.
The project is expected to create 26 jobs during construction and increased economic activity for businesses along the route once complete.
This new precinct builds on $2 million already announced under the rPPP for SA with projects in the Mid Murray and Coorong District councils being delivered.
Further applications to the program are currently under assessment. For more information on the program visit infrastructure.gov.au/regional.
According to to Senator for South Australia Charlotte Walker: “We know that projects like this, connecting people, nature, and businesses are at the heart of what makes South Australia’s regions so special.
“The Fleurieu has it all, beaches, wineries, and amazing communities that I experienced growing up and I’m eager to see this community thrive from this investment.”
Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Kristy McBain MP, said:
“The Albanese Government is committed to investing in regional, rural and remote Australia to create jobs, build opportunity and unlock economic growth and productivity – ensuring that our regions remain great places to live, work and play.
“Our investments are planning and building more liveable and productive precincts across the state through effective local regional partnerships that provide long-term benefits.”
