Last month I toyed with the idea, ‘will we obtain the 500mm mark in 2925’. Instead, I chose that to be my opening line this month. Well, it’s not appropriate this month either because (roll of drums) we attained it on the 29th of November. Yes, we have 503.5mm for 2025, so far. Our best November rainfall in the last 13 years helped us achieve that, with 91.5mm in the gauge.
Three very good falls, 22mm on the 3rd, 33mm on the 23rd & 18mm on the 29th of the month, gave us this pleasing result. It rained on 13 of the 30 days & yes, my 50,000litre tank has been overflowing since July 12th & continues to do so with each shower. The previous best overflow date was 12th December 2023, when we got 630mm YTD.
Comparison year by year since our coming to the AAEV in 2011:
2025 91.5mm (2) 503.5mm YTD (4)
2024 37.5mm 334.5mm
2023 84.0mm (3) 547.5mm (3)
2022 108.0mm (1) 564.0mm (2)
2021 40.5mm 489.5mm
2020 11.5mm 467.5mm
2019 25.5mm 355.0mm
2018 49.5mm 332.0mm
2017 9.0mm 473.0mm
2016 2.5mm 610.5mm (1)
2015 14.0mm 407.0mm
2014 19.0mm 364.0mm
2013 9.0mm 478.0mm
2012 15.0mm 491.0mm (5)
2011 20.0mm NA
Not a bad month & going well as YTD. As a matter of interest, the average for December is roughly 16.5mm, so see how we go at the end of this month. One last fact from the World Meteorological Organisation, 2025 to date is amongst the three hottest years since world records began. This is accelerating the ice-shelf melt down at an alarming rate.
December 1st is the first day of white man’s summer & the last month of the First Nations spring, (Wirituti). Their forecast is always for much thunder (Piturru) & lightning (Karntu) in November & it has been very true form. Luckily all have been accompanied by rain & reduced the risk of fire.
The next three months will be for:
- Average rainfall,
- Temperatures still above average, both day & night,
- Bushfire risk will be normal for this time of year, so be prepared,
- Oceans around Australia have higher than average temperature but our gulfs are around average which will help with the algal blooms,
- All three major oceans are in neutral,
- Soil moisture is damp but drying quickly, so watering of gardens will be needed from now on during hot weather.
So that’s the weather to date. Have a peaceful & relaxing Christmas with relatives & friends.
Best wishes,
Paul
